Gastric Band Surgery Provides Woman a New Lease on Life

If you think that there is nothing you can do about your type 2 diabetes, think again. Following   surgery, a  22-year-old Australian  woman shed nearly 100 pounds and reverse her type 2 diabetes. Having struggled her entire life with her weight, Haley Duffy was diagnosed with the disease in 2010.

Ms Duffy’s weight problems were attributed to genetics and as a child, diet and exercise did not factor positively and she was regularly hospitalized. The unlucky Aussie also had polycystic ovaries and had to undergo emergency surgery to have one of her ovaries removed. But when she was 16 she  had gastric band surgery and five years later has watched her weight drop 220 pounds.

“When I was big I wouldn’t even try to run, it was just a struggle to get in the shower basically,” Ms Duffy said. “I’m pretty confident now. I can actually run. I have so much more energy.”

Her diabetes has disappeared, and as a consequence has discovered a well of self- confidence. I’m so proud of my hard work and my accomplishments, she said, but because of excess skin, that she plans to have surgically removed, she feels like she still carries the weight.

It is a remarkable achievement because Duffy who has managed to keep the weight off by embracing a healthy lifestyle. So, if you believe that there is nothing you can do about your type 2 diabetes, just look to Ms. Duffy for inspiration.
