Diabetes & Carbs – 10 Swaps That Aren’t Gross

Feel free to grab a second helping!

Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy. They are converted into sugar by the body. For people living with diabetes, the problem arises when there is a spike in carbohydrate consumption, ergo a rise in blood sugar as well.

For this reason, many diabetics opt to cut back or even restrict carbohydrates from their diet. However, this is easier said than done!

Here are 10 carb swaps that are delicious, easy, and—of course—diabetes-friendly.

#1 Burger Buns for Portobella Buns

Suggested serving

If we are honest, then let’s just admit that it doesn’t matter what your personal diet is in regards to these Portabella Halloumi Burgers: they are absolutely delicious.

#2 French Fries for Baked Butternut Squash Fries

Suggested serving

This version of fries is so delicious and full of flavor that you’ll forget that you ever considered french fries as a side to any dish.

#3 Pasta Noodles for Zucchini Noodles

#4 Pasta Salad for Bean Salad

Suggested serving

Beans are my personal favorite source of protein and fiber. What I love about this dish is that it won’t weigh you down!

#5 Potato Side Dish for Cauliflower Side Dish

Suggested serving

This recipe is seriously delicious; you don’t even notice that it’s not potatoes. And the plus side is that you aren’t too stuffed to button your pants after eating it! The fiber in the cauliflower makes for quick digestion so that your bowels continue to move smoothly.

#6 Spaghetti for Spaghetti Squash

Suggested serving

When I first went vegetarian, this is the dish that I used to convince my family that my lifestyle wasn’t lacking in flavor. It has become a popular request from me whenever I visit home, and I bet it will be popular in your home, too!

#7 Lasagna for Squash Lasagna

Suggested serving

Nobody said that you had to cut your favorite meals out just because you wanted to try a low-carb diet! This lasagna packs all the same flavor but instead of using the empty calories in pasta strips, the recipe calls for zucchini noodles instead!

#8 Steak Sandwich for Steak Salad

Suggested serving

I may be biased because I love myself a good salad, but it’s hard not to salivate by the looks of this amazing salad. This recipe offers you a boost of protein along with fiber—and important food combination—but still manages to be low on the carbs.

#9 Regular Pancakes for Oatmeal Pancakes

Suggested serving

This pancake recipe is to die for. It not only offers a healthy boost of oats in place of the traditional high-carb flour, but it also contains fresh apples. The flavor is out of this world. It is a healthy, delicious version of my favorite morning tradition.

#10 Cherry Pie for Cherry Crumble

Suggested serving

Don’t think that we forgot dessert! Cherries make a fabulous dessert because sugar isn’t needed to bring out the incredible flavor of cherries. You can make this variation with oat flour as well for an easy, delicious low-carb dessert.
